The most common
method of watering trees is the trusty, open-ended garden hose.
Everybody has one and it gets the job done, right? Usually not.
It's easy, but it's also slow and filled with guesswork.
Quantity? Without a reservoir of known volume, you never
really know how much water you've given. If you get impatient
you will end up soaking the surface only. If you go too long,
you waste water. This problem can be overcome with a little flow
test and a timer.
Slow. In
order to get a good soaking you must lower the water flow to
avoid run-off. If you spend up to 10 minutes on one, multiply
that by the number of trees you want to water. If you build a
soil berm around each tree you can speed the whole process up,
however, but maintenance of the berm can be another challenge.
The best way to
insure proper watering is to make an additional investment in a
watering method that's fast,
applies a known quantity, and requires no additional
maintenance. Start a weekly routine you'll stick to! |
