The most common
method of watering trees is the trusty, open-ended garden hose.
Everybody has one and it gets the job done, right? Usually not.
Time is the one thing that nobody has enough of anymore, and
this method eats it like candy. As a result, most trees don't
get watered the way they should.
Why does it take so long? Run-off. In order to stop it, you must
water very slowly. Percolation is the rate at which soil will
soak up water, it is usually very slow, and cannot be changed. Soil berms
work very well for stopping run-off. However, keeping them
properly maintained has proven to be challenging over the 3-5
year period they will be used.
Shutoff timers and
other reminders can be used so you can periodically move the
hose to another tree.
This allows you to do other activities while watering, but it's a babysitting job. Few people have the tenacity to stick
with a watering program using this method. The result will be
frustration and eventual tree watering negligence. If you
haven't already tried it, do so. It might very well be the
easiest job that you can't complete.
The best way to
insure proper watering is to make an additional investment in a
watering method that is fast,
so you can start a weekly routine you'll stick to. |
